Cogent Communications Named as One of the Top Wholesale Carriers in Europe

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM, September 19, 2006 - Cogent Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: CCOI), one of the largest carriers of Internet traffic in the world, today announced that Cogent has been named a finalist for Best Wholesale Carrier by the World Communications Awards (WCA) committee. The finalists of this prestigious award were selected by the WCA committee that is chaired by Total Telecom magazine and comprised of independent judges from a wide range of industries sharing a common focus on the telecommunications industry. Over 250 entries were received for a variety of categories this year.

"Cogent Communications has made a big impact in the global telecoms business, and that has caught the attention of the WCA judges' panel, which watches the telecoms industry from every corner of the world. Cogent has been short-listed for Best Wholesale Carrier, a category traditionally dominated by incumbents. The judges recognised the new business thinking that Cogent is bringing to the sector," said David Molony, Editor in Chief, Total Telecom.

"We welcome this achievement and believe it helps validate Cogent's unique business model and the unprecedented value Cogent delivers to customers vis-à-vis high quality Internet connectivity and transport services at very competitive prices," said Dave Schaeffer, CEO Cogent Communications. "We continue to make great progress in Europe with additional customers, markets and traffic loaded onto our network, and we are committed to meeting the bandwidth demands of the continent well into the future."

The winner of the Best Wholesale Carrier will be announced at the WCAs on November 9th at a dinner gala held at the London Marriott Hotel, Grosvenor Square, London. Several other categories will also be presented that evening. For a list of judges and other info on the event, go to: http://www.worldcommsawards.com/Custom_7517.stm (link no longer available).
